Hiking in Canada by Melody Maier

Outdoor Ed Article Assignment #1
History of Hiking in Canada – Discover Canadian Outdoors
Rating: ***
This article focuses on where hiking trails across Canada have originated from. It talks about how many trails originally appeared from Native people using them to hunt, fish, and make trades.
This article is not only packed with information about the historical features of hiking, but also with more recent information. I learned that two new trails are being created that go coast-to-coast across Canada. These sound like really interesting trails because they are snowmobiling, horseback riding, and cross country skiing friendly! I also found the length of some trails astonishing. One of the trails mentioned in the article is over 650 miles long; it’s located in New Brunswick. I’ve only been on a few hiking trails before because I had no idea how much diversity there is. I’m inspired to research some new trails, and possibly try something a little further away from home.
I’ve never thought about the historical aspect of hiking trails. Usually I would just think about the scenery and wildlife but now I can keep my eye out for the historical features as well. Reading this article has inspired me to also look at the history aspect when choosing a hiking trail.
